Lewiatan Business Index steady in April - The annual PKPP Lewiatan Business Index amounted to 65 points in April, holding steady in relation to March, the Polish Confederation of Private Employers (PKPP) Lewiatan announced. The half-yearly index also remained unchanged, at 69 points. On the other hand, the quarterly index dropped by two points to 70. According to PKPP Lewiatan, the macroeconomic situation in the first quarter was stronger than anticipated, even despite poor industrial output data and weaker-than-expected retail sales in March. Nevertheless, the broader trend of weakening index values seen over the past few quarters suggests the pace of economic growth will slow somewhat through the remainder of the year. However, the deceleration will be mild, as indicated by the fact that all the indices remained at a relatively high level. PKPP Lewiatan believes that macroeconomic fundamentals still remain strong and GDP growth will continue to be driven by robust domestic consumption and investment, although both will expand at a somewhat slower rate. On the other hand, the outlook for foreign trade is less clear. The PKPP Lewiatan Business Index is constructed on the basis of market prognoses prepared by Poland's leading economists for the current quarter, half year and full year. It is measured on a 100-point scale, where a score of 50 corresponds to an economic growth forecast of 3-3.5% of GDP annually.05-12-2008
