When will your translation project require DTP?
If you need to translate a PDF, a booklet, a manual or any other type of document with images or a set layout, then you will need to use DTP services. Post-translation DTP is a little like reconstructing your document.
When you deliver a document that has a formatted layout, that layout will be damaged if the translation is simply pasted back. That is because translated text expands (often sentence length increases by 30% or more). To preserve your document's original layout and formatting, DTP work is required to correctly insert the translation back into your document, adjusting the layout accordingly.
Examples of alphabet (and translation) expansion/contraction:
| Source Language | Target Language | Text Expansion | Text Contraction | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | French | 15-20% | Text expands when translated into French | |
| French | English | 10-15% | Text contracts when translated from French | |
| English | Italian | 15% | Does not apply to technical content | |
| Italian | English | 15% | Does not apply to technical content | |
| English | German | 5-40% | There are less German words but they are longer, so text can expand greatly | |
| German | English | 5-20% | Depending on content type (there are more words in English than in German) | |
| English | Spanish | 25% | Depending on content type | |
| Spanish | English | 15% | Depending on content type | |
| English | Arabic | 25% | Depending on topic | |
| Arabic | English | 25% | Depending on topic | |
| English | Finnish | 20-30% | Finnish grammar varies greatly from English (lacks pronouns and articles) | |
| Finnish | English | 30-40% | Due to pronouns and articles | |
| English | Japanese | 20-60% | Counts each letter instead of words (varies based on subject). | |
| Japanese | English | 10-55% | Significant alphabet and grammar differences |
