As you all know, apart from Argos, I also own shares in PMR (www.pmrcorporate.com). As a result, once a month I attend PMR management meetings. Its interesting because I hear about the successes and problems of another business that I don’t run on a daily basis. I recently did a presentation for them about how our intranet works. Its funny because I think its one of those things, when you use something every day, you sort of take it for granted, but when I did the presentation, I really started to become aware of how far we have come and how much we have achieved.

Our intranet has two very important functions. First of all it automates many processes that were not automated in the past. Everything from vacation planning to ordering office supplies to managing business trips to signing attendance lists and much more. Thanks to the intranet we are saving hours and hours that we used to spend on managing these various tasks in the past. In addition many of these functionalities allow us to better control our costs as well. The best part is it helps everyone out. It allows the company to save manual labor, but it also allows employees to do things in easier ways and it helps managers manage things such as employee vacations, which was a big pain in the butt previously. There is huge value in the automation that is included in our intranet.

The second thing our intranet achieves is thanks to our blog. I can see that Argos has become extraordinary efficient at centralizing information for employees and actually providing more information than we ever have in the past. In the past we used to have more emails that would go out to ARG INT (and I think we can work on cutting down those emails even more by adding some new sections in the blog). Thanks to the blog we don’t have lots of long discussions filling up people’s mailboxes. I think that the way information is distributed at Argos makes our company special. There are always many channels of communication in any organization. Some are formal, others are informal. I think the blog centralizes the communication channel. Information is power and by providing as much information as possible for everybody to access we put everyone in the same position. There are no people who know more or less than others. As a result, I think we avoid some of the negative consequences of withholding information such as gossiping. Thanks to the fact that we publish all the news that affects the company as it happens there is no opportunity for someone to have information that others don’t. I think that creates a very healthy environment in the company. Its something we should be proud of.

Overall, I think the Intranet has become a key part of our company culture and I think it’s a real success! Its funny my presentation at PMR really reminded me of this.
