- PDF Manual DTP and Translation with CAT Tools
Project Brief:
Argos Translations was approached by a client with a PDF manual that required translation into several languages. Unfortunately, the PDF's editable source files (delivered in FrameMaker, InDesign, PageMaker etc) were either lost or had been delivered in a format not supported by CAT tools. As a result, Argos had to re-create the source files in a desirable DTP format (primarely FrameMaker) which could then be translated using CAT tools.
In formating the files and using CAT tools for further language adaptations, Argos ensured a more consistent translation. This method proved much more cost effective for our client than if formatting of all files had occurred after a translation of the original PDF. Cost reduction was possible because CAT discounts for repetitions and allows use of existing translation memory tools that help to lower overall translation cost.
Overall, the client benefited from Argos' use of CAT tools as they offered an editable document in the source language, which was formatted consistently with the rest of the documentation, and could be easily translated into further languages in the future.
