Translation Memory

Translation Memory is a tool that increases efficiency by allowing the reuse of previously translated phrases and terms. Translation memory is a technology that enables Argos Translations to store translated phrases and sentences in a special database for translators to reuse in a new translation.

Translation Memory Tools

Argos Translations maintains TM databases with translated words and phrases collected from your company’s translation projects that can be used again for your future projects. TM databases save you both time and money. Translation Memory allows Argos Translations to maintain a consistent standard of quality throughout a translation project while lowering the costs and time required to complete each project. In the end, Argos Translations passes these benefits over to our clients.

With the use of translation memory tools we are able to estimate the size of the translation, number of internal repetitions, and based on that we can plan the translation project framework.

Depending on the type of project, Argos Translations will choose from the following TM tools:

  • SDLX
  • Trados
  • DejaVu
  • Transit

Translation Memory server

In order to allow multiple translators to work on a single large assignment, or a single portion of a translation project, Argos Translations utilizes Translation Memory servers. Via TM servers translators can complete large portions of a translation project simultaneously, improving consistency of the translation, speeding up the translation process while maintaining accuracy.

Translation Memory - Client Benefits

Argos Translations uses Translation Memory to aid all of our translations. The benefits of using Translation Memory include the assurance that a high level of consistency throughout the project is kept as well as lowered operating costs (equaling lowered translation prices). Argos Translations keeps a unique Translation Memory (TM) database for each client and only uses the given database for that individual client’s projects. The greater the number of projects we complete for a client, the larger the database, which in turn leads to lowered costs.

In essence, Translation Memory allows us to both maintain high quality translation services and benefits you – the client, with lowered prices for your translation projects.

How TM works?

The steps

  1. An Argos Translations client has version 1 of a software application in English.
  2. Argos Translations translates the software into Polish:

Our translators create a Translation Memory database for this translation: terms in English with their Polish equivalents. Note that we can also create a TM database based on documents translated previously by other translation companies. This process is called Alignment, and involves matching previously created translations.

  3. A new release of the software in English becomes available (version 2) that must also be translated into Polish. Argos Translations is asked to translate the update. Many terms and sentences from the first version of the software will probably be repeated in version 2.
  4. Having a Translation Memory database based on the version 1 of the software, our TM specialist uses this database to analyze the new document (version 2) to find all the terms that were already translated in version 1 and are repeated in the new version of the software. The TM database is applied to the new version and the translator now only has to translate the outstanding text. The entire text is then of course edited and proofread by our linguists. The client, therefore, does not pay the full price for the phrases that were previously translated.

The savings Translation Memory can save clients significant amounts of money. Here’s a short description of the process.

Sometimes, if the terminology used in a new document is very similar to the terminology used in previous documents (which is stored in our TM database), 100 % sentence matches may occur – an identical sentence was already translated by our translators and is reused in the new document. At times, there are also partial matches of previously translated documents – these are called fuzzy matches. This means that parts of a sentence previously translated and found in the TM database can be pre–translated in the new document. All 100% matches are checked by an editor to ensure that the translation is correct in the new context. The advantages of using TM include savings on translation costs and consistency of terminology in all translated documentation.

Important Translation memory is mainly suitable for technical documentation. It cannot always be applied when translating marketing material or small collateral documents.

TM Consultancy

If you have an in-house translation team in your company and you are not utilizing Translation Memory technology, then you are losing money. A Translation Memory system in your company allows you to increase quality and to maintain consistency across all the translated materials that your in–house team translates.

TM for companies with in-house translators

If you are interested in implementing a Translation Memory system in your company, we have a range of consulting services designed to make your task easier. We can carry out an on-site needs analysis in order to determine what the best solutions are for your particular TM needs, and then work with you to draw up an implementation schedule. We handle everything from guiding your choice of hardware and software to training your translators and engineers in the use of the tools. More specifically, these services include:

  • Training in the use of SDLX and other SDL applications (HelpQA, HtmlQA, SDLTermbase, Toolproof, SDLInsight)
  • Localization engineering services

The complexity of the system you require depends on the number of translators you employ and the type and quantity of material you translate. Some materials are better suited to use with translation memory than others, but don’t hesitate to contact us and let us assess your needs. If this is something you think you may benefit from, we can set up a face-to-face presentation to show you how Argos Translations can aid you in this process.

Here are some of the services you might require if you are in need of TM consulting:

  • Preparation of an initial cost and needs analysis
  • Selection/analysis of hardware
  • Selection of the best translation memory application for your needs
  • Construction of a TM database by aligning previously translated texts
  • Training for translators on how to use TM and TM tools
